Gerontology Interdisciplinary Master's of Science Program

Program Description


Gerontology is the interdisciplinary study of the aging process and issues related to an aging society.  As a basic and applied science, it examines specific biological and physiological changes in individuals as well as the broader psychological and social issues confronting them.  Although much of the focus of gerontology is on older adults and later life, the field recognizes the value of understanding the full life course.


Length of Program


The Gerontology Interdisciplinary Master’s program is available in both full-time (9+ credit hours per semester) and part-time options.  The full-time program of study is completed in two (2) years, including a summer semester.  The part-time program of study is typically completed in three (3) years, including summer semesters.  Thirty-three (33) to thirty-six (36) credit hours are required to complete this program, depending on Project/Thesis option selected.  (33 for Master’s Project; 36 for Master’s Thesis)


Program of Study


The Gerontology Interdisciplinary program of study requires completion of the Master’s Degree core curriculum, a 150 hour practicum, elective courses and a Master’s Project or Thesis.  Several specialty focus areas are available, or students can customize a program of study.

Some courses are available online or via distance, but this program cannot be completed online.

How to Apply


A cohort of approximately 10-12 students is accepted into the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Master’s program each fall semester.  Applications are available fall of the previous year.
