Background

I am an Associate Professor (with Tenure) and Associate Director for Education and Practice, the University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. I graduated from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN with a BS in nursing, the University of Utah College of Nursing with a master's degree in Nursing (Gerontological Nurse Practitioner) and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies.

I am certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner and an advanced practice palliative care nurse. I am a member of the University's interdisciplinary Center on Aging and serve on the editorial boards for the International Journal of Palliative Nursing. I also serve on the national faculty for the Geriatric End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC).

Before joining the faculty at the College of Nursing in the fall of 2001, I oversaw the collaboration between the University of Wisconsin and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) which produced the JCAHO pain assessment and management standards. I also assisted with national pain management organizational change programs in home health programs and other small organizations.

Research

  • Enhanced RN Credentials
  • My research and scholarship interests center on end-of-life care and pain and symptom management and I find I do my best work in interdisciplinary, collaborative teams.
  • I am currently involved in a number of research studies including Measuring Nursing Care Quality Related to Pain Management, which includes parallel studies exploring how oncology certification impacts pain outcomes and the applicability of the instrument in hospitalized veterans. I have just completed a study, with colleagues Drs. Lee Ellington and Mardie Clayton, a study exploring the communication that occurs between home care hospices and family caregivers. In addition, I serve as a consultant for a Canadian project aimed at helping rural elders navigate the healthcare system entitled Timely Access and Seamless Transitions in Rural Palliative/End of Life Care. Finally, I am completing a study on the prevalence of pain in assisted living residents with the goal of developing a pain management intervention for assisted living staff, residents and families/close others.
