Background

Lauren Clark recently joined the University of Utah College as co-director of the PhD Program. Dr. Clark completed her education at the University of Arizona, earning a baccalaureate in nursing, master’s degree in Community Health Nursing, and doctorate in Clinical Nursing Research. Her post-doctoral training includes a certificate in Medical Anthropology from the University of Arizona and cultural anthropology methods through the National Science Foundation. 

Funded as an investigator or co-investigator by NICHD, NINR, AHRQ, and HCFA (now CMS), Dr. Clark conducts interdisciplinary health research primarily with Latino populations. She has written about Latino maternal-child health topics such as social support in the perinatal period, health care expectations and access, breastfeeding, early childhood feeding practices, and childhood obesity. In adult Latino populations she has published research on cultural aspects of pain management in nursing homes, diabetes management, and community and provider perspectives on culturally-competent health systems for Latinos.  She is currently exploring research with disabled communities.

Publications from Dr. Clark’s program of research have appeared in Social Science and Medicine, Field Methods, Breastfeeding Medicine, Western Journal of Nursing Research, Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Health Care for Women International, and Medical Anthropology Quarterly.  Dr. Clark has served on the American Anthropological Association’s Committee on Ethics.  She was an active member of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Internal Review Board for several years and a member of the Scientific Research Ethics Committee. From 2004-2006 she served as a chartered member of the NIH peer review panel for Nursing Science with Children and Families.  She is a fellow in the Society for Applied Anthropology and the American Academy of Nursing.
