University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

About the GNL Certificate

Certification has been linked to fewer medical errors and increased job satisfaction and confidence (American Association of Critical Care Nurses 2002)

The Geriatric Nursing Leadership certificate track provides a convenient way for RNs to prepare for national certification with a specialty in geriatric care by taking courses that emphasize best practices and leadership development. Applicants can complete the program for academic noncredit through the Continuing Education Office or an applicant can receive credit for their work by becoming a matriculated student of the University of Utah. All courses are offered in an on-line format.

Academic noncredit courses are less expensive to take, however no credit will be given for any work that is done should an applicant decide to pursue a higher degree like a BS in the future. Students who complete the program with academic noncredit courses will receive a letter and certificate confirming that they completed the courses taken.

In order to be accepted into the certificate track the following requirements must be met:

  • Must be a licensed RN throughout the program of study
  • Must have an Associates or Bachelor's Degree
  • If you are applying as a matriculated student you must be accepted into the University of Utah as well as the College of Nursing
