Certification Exam

72% of certified nurses reported they received one or more benefits for achieving certification... (American Journal of Nursing)

The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers an exam in which licensed registered nurses can receive national certification in geriatric care. The courses taken in the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Program will prepare students for this exam by focusing on the best practices and care of older adults.

The certification exam is a computer-based test and there is a 90 day window to take the exam once ANCC receives a nurse's application. If a student applies to take the exam within 90 days of completing the coursework, the Noorda Geriatric Scholar Program will pay the exam fees. If a student successfully completes the exam, the certification will be valid for 5 years and will then need to be renewed.

Prior to taking the ANCC Gerontology Certification Exam, the following list of requirements must be met:

  • Must have a current RN license
  • Must have practiced the equivalent of 2 years full time as an RN
  • Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of gerontological nursing within the last 3 years
  • Completed 30 hours of continuing education in gerontological practice within the last 3 years
