Graduate Certificate Program
Purpose: To support the overall goal of the University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (UUHCGNE) to expand the number of highly qualified geriatric nursing faculty by specifically focusing on objective three:
- Prepare at least 10% of adult care graduates as geriatric nursing experts who earn the geriatric nursing/gerontology certificate with at least nine credits of designated aging course work.
Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program
Graduate Certificate
This 15-hour graduate certificate program has been designed to prepare adult care graduates as geriatric nursing experts qualified to provide faculty for basic and advanced practice nursing programs in community colleges, colleges and universities. The gerontology certificate will be indicated on a student’s transcript. Additional courses may be added upon request and approval from UUHCGNE/GIP.
Category A: Certificate Core Courses: must take both
GERON 6001: Introduction to Gerontology
(This course must be taken on-ground. Exceptions may be granted by Dale Lund Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence Associate Director of Research)
Overview of gerontology presented by examining some of the major issues, problems, and solutions related to an aging society; research methodology and theories of aging; and future implications at local, national, and international levels. The value of interdisciplinary and life course perspectives are emphasized.
NURS 6010: Teaching and Learning in Advanced Practice
Content and experience basic to the teaching role of clinical specialists, nurse practitioners, and nursing administrators, including an overview of the teaching-learning process, systematic planning for teaching-learning, selection of appropriate teaching methodologies, and evaluation of learning. Current educational and nursing research topics will be considered to assist in the application of findings. Time also spent with a preceptor.
