University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

Master's & DNP Scholarships

Purpose:  To support the overall goal of the University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence (UUHCGNE) to expand the number of highly qualified geriatric nursing faculty by specifically focusing on objective three:

  • Prepare at least 10% of adult care graduates as geriatric nursing experts who earn the geriatric nursing/gerontology certificate with at least nine credits of designated aging course work.

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available for master's and DNP students who commit to obtaining the Geriatric Subspecialty or the Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program Graduate Certificate. Two different scholarships are available: General scholarships will be awarded in up to $750 per 3-credit class increments and out-of-state scholarships that convert student to in-state tuition status for the scholarship period, qualify the recipient for the Graduate Tuition Benefit that pays a substantial portion of tuition for fall and spring terms, and provides a stipend to defray educational expenses.

Priority will be given to those students who are pursuing a degree to promote geriatric education in future nurses, are currently involved in the education of future nurses and/or express a clear intention and plan for career in geriatric education with a focus on teaching future nurses. Information on scholarships is available by contacting Jan Abramson, Project Administrator by phone: 801.587.8390, e-mail: jan.abramson@nurs.utah.edu

Noorda Geriatric Subspecialty

The Geriatric Subspecialty has been designed for students to develop concentrated knowledge to be prepared to teach geriatric or gerontological content. This nine-hour subspecialty can be acquired by incorporating geriatric nursing and gerontology classes into coursework. Scholarships have been designed to integrate into programs of study and maximize funding. Each program of study will have a different route to the geriatric subspecialty.

Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program Graduate Certificate

A specialized 15-hour graduate certificate program has been designed to prepare adult care graduates as geriatric nursing experts qualified to provide faculty for basic and advanced practice nursing programs in community colleges, colleges and universities. The gerontology certificate will be indicated on a student's transcript. Students will work closely with the Hartford Center Project Administrator to leverage scholarship funding.
