Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist Program

acute_careThe College of Nursing introduced the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist programs in 1999 as an effort to meet the changing needs of healthcare in the intermountain region. Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists play a vital role in caring for the acutely and critically ill in hospitals, nursing facilities, and the community.

In an emergency, acute, or critical care setting specialized knowledge about caring for older adults can be extremely beneficial to the patient's care and subsequent quality of life. Older adults may act differently to medications and treatments which puts them at a higher risk for complications both during and after their hospitalization. Knowing how prescribed treatments and medications will affect the patient and taking the correct steps to prevent potential errors can ultimately lead to fewer complications and better outcomes. An Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist with a sub-specialty in gerontology can greatly reduce risk and improve the quality of life of the older patients that they care for.

Students will have the opportunity to incorporate a 9-hour Noorda Geriatric Nursing Scholar subspecialty into their program of study. They may also choose to complete a specialized 15-hour Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence Noorda Graduate Certificate of Gerontology program while completing their degree. Scholarship opportunities are available, via an application process, to students who commit to completing a geriatric subspecialty. Additionally, a limited number of scholarships may be available for those students who wish to complete the Noorda Gerontology Graduate Certificate.
