Innovative learning.
Rewarding careers.

Beyond the physical changes that accompany aging, older adults deal with multiple social and emotional changes, stressors, and challenges. Dementia, depression, anxiety, insomnia, memory problems and chronic pain are common concerns in the geriatric population. The University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence offers geriatric specialty preparation to students who are enrolled in the Psychiatric Mental Health master’s and DNP programs. The graduates are well-educated care providers prepared to deliver comprehensive mental health care, assessment, treatment planning, intervention and evaluation for this unique population.

Upon completion of the required course work students are eligible to sit for ANCC Certification as Adult Mental Psychiatric Health Nurse Practitioners, Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners and or Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Clinical practicum throughout the program are designed to give students opportunities in a variety of in-patient, out-patient and community based settings which serve the geriatric population.

Students will have opportunity to incorporate electives from the gerontology certificate program into their program of study. They also may choose to complete the 15 credit Graduate Certificate of Gerontology program in addition to their Psychiatric Mental Health MS. Scholarship opportunities are available to students who commit to a geriatric sub-specialization.
