University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

Geriatric Specialty Cohort

Each geriatric specialty cohort will have a common focus. Faculty who teach in the program will all have geriatrics/gerontology backgrounds, experience and active gerontology-related research programs.

The gerontology-focused PhD program is offered through the College of Nursing's highly accliamed distant program format. This format allows students to "educate in place" while recieving a doctoral education that is designed for self-motivated, independent learners ready to engage in the intellectual rigors of an academic community.

Hear "first-hand" what students in our distance PhD program have to say.

Community and academic socialization is important for student success. To support student success:

  • Three required intensive sessions are held each of the first three years of study
  • Access to the virtual student lounge fosters community among PhD students
  • The electronic classroom opens one hour before class so students can interact face-to-face

Each cohort will begin their program of study with a required week-long intensive on-campus orientation at the University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. This week is designed to begin the socialization process of your doctoral program. It will enhance your educational experience by introducing you to your classmates and faculty, initiate your coursework and ensure you are sufficiently trained in the use of the required technology. PhD students are also required to attend an annual research conference. Research conferences will be selected by program faculty, and the student cohort group and faculty will attend together. Students will be encouraged to present work, participate in learning opportunities, consult with faculty, and interact with national experts. These conferences are an important component of professional development and socialization.
