Clinical Track Faculty Position: Certified Nurse Midwife

The University of Utah College of Nursing is seeking applicants for a Certified Nurse Midwife.

The incumbent will provide comprehensive primary health care to select population of essentially healthy women including antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care of pregnant woman.  Participates in the care of women with medical complications in collaboration with Obstetricians - Gynecologists or other MD as is indicated by presenting problem.  The position requires a considerable degree of independent skills and judgment necessary to monitor and respond to changes in patients' condition.  Works in normal client care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

Criteria for the position include graduation from an accredited school of Nurse Midwifery with a master's or doctoral degree; certification by ACNM; Utah State Licensure; one or more years of Nurse Midwifery primary care and labor and delivery experience (desired); and BCLS.  Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with patients and other members of health care team are essential. 

Major areas of responsibility include:

  • Perform accurate history and physical examination on essentially health women concluding with diagnosis and treatment.
  • Provides primary care to pregnant women including ordering and evaluation of diagnostic tests and management of minor complications.
  • Provides inpatient and outpatient obstetrical care for essentially healthy women.
  • Provided individualized client teaching and counseling in respect to current identified problem, weeks gestation and social/cultural situation.
  • Completes necessary documentation, marks billing encounter form appropriately.
  • Instructs and supervises/precepts nurse midwifery and medical students and residents as assigned.  Ensures a positive learning environment.
  • Participates in research, service statistics collections and continuing education activities.
  • Serves as a mentor/preceptor for students in the nurse midwifery master's program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The CNM Reports directly to the Clinical Director of BirthCare HealthCare and indirectly to the Academic Director of the Nurse Midwifery Program and the College of Nursing Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.  Yearly evaluation will be performed by the Division Chair based on above requirements, functions and responsibilities and with review of set goals according to RPT clinical criteria.
