The Nurse Educator - Teaching Nursing
This country is increasingly in need of qualified nurse faculty who have been educated to function effectively in academia. A significant part of the nursing shortage is related to the limited number of faculty available to teach the highly qualified applicant pool of men and women who apply to nursing programs across the country.
The University of Utah College of Nursing Teaching Nursing master’s (MS) specialty program is contributing to the next generation of nurse educators by offering a master’s degree in Teaching Nursing and a post-master’s certificate in Teaching Nursing. We offer a 36-40 semester hour MS program with emphasis in nursing education for qualified registered nurses who wish to pursue graduate study to prepare themselves as entry level nurse educators. In the program of study emphasis is placed on mentorship with highly qualified nursing faculty in a variety of specialties, depending on the student’s interest. The College of Nursing also offers a post-master’s certificate (15 semester hours) in Teaching Nursing for registered nurses who already hold a graduate degree in the nursing discipline. Both the master’s and post-master’s options may be completed primarily on line.
A full-time student (9+ hours/semester) can complete the master’s program in two academic years including the summer session between year one and year two. The MS program of study includes four core nursing courses required of all master’s students, five required teaching nursing courses, four of which contain practicum requirements, and general education elective courses to be taken outside the College of Nursing. A part-time program of study can be completed in three academic years including two summer sessions.
The post-master’s certificate program may be completed in one or two academic years depending on the number of hours taken per semester. The certificate is issued by the College of Nursing to certify advanced preparation in teaching.
In-state (resident) tuition may be available to residents of 14 western states. Please visit http://wiche-ice.org/ for more information
