Financial Aid for PhD Education
The College of Nursing has varying types of doctoral incentive packages and scholarships available. Most awards and scholarships require full time study (9 credits/semester), and some include the opportunity for employment as a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant. Award packages sponsored by generous donors vary in funding from year to year. Financial aid awarded through the College of Nursing is typically used to supplement students’ own national-level fellowships and scholarships.

Federal Funding for PhD Education
There is federal funding to support PhD education, including loans and fellowships. Some of the funding mechanisms are listed below, although this list is by no means exhaustive. Application requires faculty sponsorship.
- The Graduate Partnership Program: The University of Utah has one of six PhD programs nationally included in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Graduate Partnership Program (GPP). Students at the University of Utah are eligible for NIH-supported education and learning opportunities at the Bethesda campus of the National Institutes of Health. Information on this program can be found at http://www.ninr.nih.gov/Training/
TrainingOpportunitiesIntramural/GraduatepartnershipprogFile/. - The National Research Service Award (NRSA) from NIH is another mechanism to support doctoral education. The program supports the students program of study and dissertation research under the guidance of a strong and well-matched faculty mentor chosen by the student. Program information and application information is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/par-05-091.html
- Professional Organizations often support members’ graduate study through the award of scholarships. The American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, Oncology Nurses Society, Sigma Theta Tau, and the American Nurses’ Foundation all offer programs to support research and scholarship of nurses.
