Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Distance Program
Applications are currently being accepted for a gerontology-focused specialty cohort for the Spring 2009 semester. The due date for application to this cohort is August 6, 2008. Click here to apply for the PhD Program.
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Distance Program prepares graduates for research careers. After establishing a research trajectory in the PhD Program, graduates will be prepared to make lifelong contributions to theory, practice, policy, leadership, and education. The goal is preparation of researchers in a defined area of nursing inquiry.
The traditional PhD program admits students who have earned a Master's degree in Nursing. Another option is the BS-PhD track, which admits registered nurses who have earned a bachelor's degree with a major in nursing (BSN, BS). The traditional PhD track (MS-PhD) and the BS-PhD track share a common program of study, although the BS-PhD program of study includes 9 additional credits in an MS cognate area.
Requirements for Program Completion
Students admitted to the PhD program must complete all courses in the program of study and a dissertation. Time required to complete the program of study is variable and is based on the past academic achievements of the individual, as well as current professional, scholarly, and personal goals. The faculty advisor or dissertation committee may require course work to address identified academic deficiencies, and identify inter-departmental and College of Nursing courses in the student’s area of specialization. All course work applied to the degree must be completed within seven (7) years.
All students in the PhD program are required to attend an intensive orientation on the University of Utah campus the first week of their first year in the program and each subsequent fall semester. Students will also be required to attend a research conference as a group each year.
In addition, the University's policy requires successful completion of written and oral qualifying examinations at the conclusion of formal coursework prior to admission to PhD candidacy and initiation of the dissertation. Additional details are listed on the University of Utah Graduate School website and the University of Utah College of Nursing Policy and Progression Manual of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree Program.
