Incentive Implementation Information

Incentives are paid only if the CON faculty is listed on the application as the "Principal Investigator".  This means that the granting agency needs to recognize dual PIs and write the award letter to both PIs, as is currently done by NIH. Since (1) the term co-PI is no longer allowed by OSP or NIH, (2) OSP has to approve dual PI designation for extramural grants, and (3) the term co-PI is ambiguous because it has been commonly used to imply a second level position higher than a co-I and lower than a PI, it needs to be clear that only PIs recognized by the granting agency meet the criterion as PI for the incentive policy.

To summarize, documentation needs to be:

A. For grant proposal funding incentive:

  1. Only full proposals are eligible; preliminary proposals and letters of intent are not currently eligible.
  2. Copy of the FOA, application/subcontract, and budget must be submitted to the research office (Cathy Osborne)
  3. College faculty listed as Principal Investigator on the face page
  4. Green and Orange forms (or the equivalent) on file

B. For grant funding incentive:

  1. Letter of award addressed to CON faculty as PI from the granting agency.
  2. Green form (or the equivalent) must be on file

While only grants submitted through the College of Nursing are technically eligible for incentive, any grant or application receiving the above criteria and, if the budget includes F&A, will pay indirect costs to the College, is eligible for incentive award. If there is more than one Principal Investigator listed, each CON PI will receive incentive proportional to the total award divided by the number of PIs. Only CON faculty are awarded incentive.

Faculty listed on grants as the PI can share the incentive with anyone they like, by asking for transfer of funds to a CON Development account, or by using their development funds to make an allowed purchase for someone (e.g., staff, or faculty without appointment in the College) if the recipient is not eligible for a development account.
