College of Nursing

International Opportunities

The College of Nursings' Office of Outreach is working to provide international opportunities for students, and faculty members.  We believe nurses need a global perspective on healthcare and healing.  Our faculty have wonderful expertise to share with people around the world and our students are learning about life beyond our borders through the many activities supported by the College. Opportunities currently available include:

1. Through a partnership with YouthLinc,  students and faculty can serve in Kiamuri, Kenya; Ocotlan, Mexico; Santa Rosa, Peru; or Khao Lak, Thailand.  Applications for these service experiences must be completed by October on an annual basis. Participants selected must have an identified sponsor or scholarship to participate. This procedure insures that all participants have an equal opportunity and not just those who can afford to travel are chosen to represent the College of Nursing and YouthLinc. YouthLinc works with all applicants to identify a scholarship sponsor. During the months of October through May the participants prepare for their international service experience through learning about and working with the community they will be serving. Great care is taken to identify projects identified by those to be served as well as projects that can be completed to the satisfaction of the partners. The YouthLinc  students must also provide weekly service in their own community during the months prior to their international travel. For further information you may contact the director, Judy Zone at http://www.youthlinc.org/. 2.  The College of Nursing has a partnership with the National Autonomous University of Mexico,(UNAM) Colleges of Nursing in Chiapas and Mexico City that provides collaborative opportunities in cultural, educational and research experiences. Annually the Colleges exchange students and faculty to experience life in each others' cultural setting. Autumn and Spring break weeks are usually the time selected for these cultural/educational exchanges.  Students from both Universities have the opportunity to study for a semester on the campuses of UNAM or the U of U. Collaborative research opportunities are also available between our two universities. For more information please contact Penny Brooke, Director of Outreach at: penny.brooke@nurs.utah.edu

3. The opportunity to study in Sweden and Finland  for a semester is made available through an exchange program coordinated by faculty at the College of Nursing. For more details please contact Dr. Sandr Haak at sandra.haak@nurs.utah.edu

4. In partnership with the College of Education and University Neighborhood Partners, a summer semester, 2 credit course with an in-country experience in Mexico early in August, is available annually. For more information contact Jane Dyer at: jane.dyer@nurs.utah.edu

5.  The College collaborates with the School of Medicine to offer the following international experiences. For more information, contact the College of Nursing and the School of Medicine faculty member identified with each program:

6.  Programs Under Development: A service trip to Cuba is being planned for October 2009 or 2010 during Autumn break.  Visits to hospitals, clinics, elderly living centers and orphanages are being arranged for  this nursing  educational service visit. The exact dates of the experience will be shared when we know that  legal admission to Cuba has been received from our government.  The College also has been supporting the development of a library for a new baccalaureate nursing program in Nepal. The faculty and students of this school are egar for  an exchange of ideas from students and faculty from our College.  A visit to Nepal is being discussed and would be most welcomed by our sister school in Kathmandu.
