The University of Utah College of Nursing welcomed its Summer 2026 baccalaureate cohort with the annual Lamp of Learning ceremony, a meaningful tradition that highlights the beginning of each student’s path into professional nursing. The event celebrates not only students’ acceptance into the program, but also the dedication and purpose that led them to pursue a career centered on care, knowledge, and service.
Rooted in the history of the profession, the Lamp of Learning is inspired by Florence Nightingale, whose leadership during the Crimean War helped transform health care practices. Through her emphasis on sanitation, patient-centered care, and observation, Nightingale reshaped nursing and established standards that continue to influence the profession today. The lamp remains a lasting symbol of knowledge, responsibility, and compassionate care.
As part of the ceremony, each student was presented with a Lamp of Learning pin by the College of Nursing Advancement team, an emblem of the values, integrity, and professionalism central to nursing practice. Surrounded by supportive faculty, loved ones, and fellow classmates, the Summer 2026 cohort was officially introduced as members of the College of Nursing community.
Throughout the event, speakers offered words of reflection and encouragement, sharing insights to inspire students as they step into this next phase of their journey.

“It’s always a privilege to speak at the Lamp of Learning ceremony because it truly marks the beginning of a journey. When you sit at graduation, you will be able to look back on this day and see how much you have learned and how you have changed. Today is the symbolic day that you join the ranks of professional nurses.”
— Melody Krahulec, DNP, RN
“The road ahead will challenge you. There will be long clinical days, late-night study sessions, and moments of stress and anxiety. Exams may feel overwhelming. But remember this: growth happens in the struggle. Every challenge will make you stronger, more skilled, and more resilient. And the sacrifices you make will be worth it.”
— Angela Fenton, DNP, MS, RN, CNE
“I encourage you to reflect on the moments that brought you here. Somewhere along your journey, there was a desire to be there for others in their times of need—to listen, to support, or simply to make sure someone did not feel alone. In darker moments, hold on to the light that brought you here, and remember your ability to make the world a kinder place.”
— Jyoti Tambhar, Class of 2023
