The University of Utah College of Nursing (CON) welcomed a group of young aspiring health care professionals for the 5th Annual Future Nurses Summer Camp. Led by Aaron Enz, community engagement manager at the CON, the camp brought together 30 middle school and high students who are beginning to imagine themselves in careers that serve and care for others. Students got a sense of what it means to be a nurse, not just in the classroom, but in the many places nurses show up every day.
The purpose of the camp is to inspire campers to consider a career in nursing, inform them about the wide-ranging and impactful roles of nurses, and introduce them to the student experience at the CON. Current nursing students served as camp counselors, building real connections and offering a candid look at college life. Faculty and staff members spent time with the group sharing their expertise and passion for the nursing field, helping students see both the science and the heart behind the work.
Throughout the week, campers stayed busy with hands-on learning and behind-the-scenes access. A standout moment for many was time spent in the College of Nursing Simulation Center, where students participated in immersive activities that brought health care scenarios to life. They also toured the AirMed helipad, met the flight crew, and explored a helicopter up close, giving them a glimpse into emergency care. Alongside this, campers practiced basic wilderness first aid, met with admissions advisors to better understand the path to college, and explored campus spaces that gave them a sense of belonging in a university setting.
The camp was made possible by a wide network of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and campus partners who generously gave their time and support. Parents and guardians were also invited to be part of the experience, attending a dinner and learning more about nursing pathways, financial aid, and preparing for college.
Looking ahead, students who felt inspired by this experience or who are just beginning to explore an interest in health care will have another opportunity to get involved through Saturday Academy in January 2027. The program offers a chance to return to campus, connect with faculty and students, and continue exploring what a future in nursing could look like.
