Join us as we welcome the Fall 2026 cohort to the University of Utah College of Nursing.

What is the Lamp of Learning Ceremony?

The Lamp of Learning ceremony at the University of Utah College of Nursing honors a long-standing tradition in nursing that symbolizes the commitment to knowledge, compassion, and professional service that defines the nursing profession. This event takes its inspiration from Florence Nightingale, a British nurse considered the founder of modern nursing. During the Crimean War in the 1850s, Nightingale cared for wounded soldiers through the night by lamplight, earning the enduring nickname the Lady with the Lamp. Her efforts to improve hospital sanitation and patient care helped reduce mortality rates and set a new standard for nursing practice.

The lamp itself represents more than illumination. It reflects the values nurses carry forward as they begin their education and future careers: dedication to learning, compassion for patients, and the resilience required to serve others. At the ceremony, students are welcomed into the College of Nursing and acknowledged for their hard work in reaching this milestone. They gather with faculty, family, and peers to recite the nursing oath and receive a commemorative Lamp of Learning pin. This pin, traditionally given by the College of Nursing Alumni, stands as a symbol of the intellectual curiosity, integrity, and care that will guide them through their training and beyond.

The Lamp of Learning ceremony marks the beginning of each student’s professional journey. It celebrates their choice to commit to nursing, recognizes the legacy of excellence they join, and serves as a reminder of the meaningful impact they can have on the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
