Graduate Scholarship and Fellowship Funding

  • Graduate scholarships are awarded annually. Awards are not renewable and funding is not guaranteed year-to-year. Each year’s application cycle aligns with admissions and normally occurs in December or January. Application instructions for incoming applicants are provided by our Scholarships and Student Funding Administrator during the admissions process. The information is sent via email and includes deadlines and important information. Returning students are notified via Canvas announcements. The administrator also provides technical support for students during the application cycle and offers all applicants the chance to verify the completeness and submission of their materials when the application closes.

Scholarships are awarded for fall and spring semesters. Funding is not offered for summer semesters. DNP students are eligible to receive up to 3 years of funding. MS students are eligible to receive up to 2 years of funding. PhD students will be provided funding through their required coursework.

  • The only approved method for determining financial need at the University of Utah is the Student Aid Index, calculated from the FAFSA application. Since most scholarships at the College of Nursing are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit, it’s important that all scholarship applicants complete their FAFSA application.

FAFSA is managed annually and each year’s application is usually available by October 1. The College of Nursing advises all students to complete their FAFSA as soon as possible to avoid any delays in the calculation of their financial need. If an applicant’s financial need information isn’t available at the time award decisions are made they cannot be considered for need based scholarships.

    • Late applications are not accepted and will not be reviewed. Letters of recommendation received after the application deadline constitute a late application.
    • Students must remain on their approved program of study and progress through the nursing program to remain eligible for their scholarships. Students who need to retake courses can keep their scholarship if the terms and conditions of their particular scholarships allow it. However, they will not receive additional scholarship funding to make up for the semester their scholarship would have originally applied to.
    • Scholarship recipients who defer enrollment into a graduate program forfeit their scholarships and must reapply with the cohort they will be joining.
    • Only students who are enrolled in a College of Nursing program are eligible to receive College of Nursing scholarships. Students who are awarded scholarships and then fail to enroll in the nursing program forfeit their scholarships.

Graduate Scholarship and Fellowship Funding

Application Requirements

We accept scholarship applications for all of our matriculated graduate programs, including:

  • Masters of Science in Nursing
  • Masters of Science in Gerontology
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice
  • PhD program

Unfortunately, our post-graduate certificate programs are not eligible to receive scholarship funding.

A completed scholarship application includes:

  • Submitted Application (submitted through the application system)
  • Two (2) letters of recommendations (submitted through the application system)

Applications are reviewed between mid-February and Mid-March.  Award decisions are made by the first week of April.

Please note, applicants to our programs will be submitting a funding application without knowing their admission status. Only students who are admitted will have their application file reviewed. Basing our scholarship deadline on admission notification dates would push back funding notifications to mid-summer.

FAFSA Submission Requirements

Students who wish to be considered for financial need awards or merit awards that recognize financial need concurrently must submit a FAFSA.

The bulk of the College of Nursing awards are a combination of merit/financial need awards. Students must show a baseline level of need to be considered on merit. The FAFSA is not the sole determining factor for need awards. The College of Nursing Scholarship application provides an additional section to provide financial need information that may not be considered by FAFSA.

Prospective and current students should submit a FAFSA application by March 1.

Find more information about FAFSA from the University of Utah Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
