Meet the Needs of an Aging Population
Join a program that prepares professionals to understand the aging process and issues related to an aging society. Learn from experts who value an interdisciplinary approach, and leave the program equipped to be a leader in the field of aging.
Our Mission
Gerontology is the interdisciplinary study of the aging process and issues related to an aging society. Although much of the focus of gerontology is on older adults and later life, the field recognizes the value of understanding the full life course—the human experience of aging.
The University of Utah Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program's underlying purpose in research, teaching, and service activities is to prepare the next generation of leaders in the field of aging. We are committed to developing and disseminating knowledge that leads to improved health and quality of life among individuals, families, and communities throughout the life course.
Programs
Courses and programs are open to students from ALL academic disciplines and professions. We also offer all of our courses in an online learning format, making this an ideal program for those living at a distance, working professionals, or others who need the flexibility that online degree programs offer.
Information Session
Information sessions are the best way to receive information about the application requirements and admissions process and talk with faculty and current students in the MS programs. Prospective students are encouraged to attend an information session before applying to a graduate program.

New Dual MSG/MPAS Program
The University of Utah Physician Assistant Program has partnered with the University of Utah College of Nursing to establish a dual degree option, Master of Science in Gerontology (MSG) + Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS). This dual degree option will prepare future PAs who plan to practice in the field of aging. The Gerontology curriculum is online and starts in Spring 2024, one semester ahead of the PA Program summer start date. Students enrolled in this dual degree option will experience additional curricula and complete a clinical practicum emphasis in gerontology. Graduates will earn two highly respected degrees over 8 continuous semesters, 32 months.
The MPAS portion of the curriculum is identical in terms of time, training, and cost. The dual MSG/MPAS track will incur additional time and cost. Students enrolled in the dual degree option must complete spring semester 2024 MSG coursework to matriculate into the PA Program in the summer semester of 2024.
