College of Nursing Application Process

For Main Campus and RN-BS applications, apply through the University of Utah Office of Admissions. Our College of Nursing application is embedded within the Main Campus application.

You should apply for the specific semester in which you plan to start the program.

Application Deadlines

A complete application must be received by the deadline at 5:00 PM Mountain Time.

Fall Semester

  • Opens: April 1
  • Closes: June 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time

Spring Semester

  • Opens: September 2
  • Closes: November 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time

Summer Semester

  • Opens: December 1
  • Closes: March 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time

Application Details

RN-BS Electronic Application

The College of Nursing application is essentially a tab embedded within the Main Campus application. This tab is generated when applicants select "Pre-Nursing" as their intended major. Full major status in nursing will be declared as part of the onboarding process.

  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. All required transcripts must be submitted before the application deadline. Do not wait until the deadline to request that your transcripts be sent to Main Campus. Please review the application deadlines listed above.
  • Enter your prerequisite courses in the application. We need this information to calculate your total prerequisite GPA. You will enter these courses under the Prerequisite Course Information section of the application in the College of Nursing Tab.
  • Enter all of your nursing courses in the application. We need this information to calculate your Nursing GPA. You will enter these courses under the Prerequisite Course Information section of the application in the College of Nursing Tab.
  • If you have a nursing license, upload a copy of your license. If you do not have a nursing license yet, upload a Word document with your NCLEX test date.

  • Complete the essay questions.

     

U OF U APPLICATION

Reminder: The College of Nursing application will be embedded within the University of Utah application.

Apply only when you know which semester you wish to start. Applications are only valid for one semester at a time.

  • Application type:
    • Transfer
    • 2nd Bachelor's, if you have a previous bachelor's degree
    • Returning, if you have previously taken University of Utah courses
  • Official transcripts: Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. These are the transcripts referenced above.
  • Campus: Select "UOnline" from the campus drop-down menu.
  • Area of Focus: Select "Pre-Nursing." Full major status in nursing will be declared as part of the onboarding process.
    • The College of Nursing application option will appear once you select Pre-Nursing.
    • You will then see the RN-BS option.
  • U of U application deadlines:
    • Fall: June 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time
    • Spring: November 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time
    • Summer: March 1 at 5:00 PM Mountain Time

Application Requirements

Education

Upload a copy of an official transcript from all colleges and universities attended, including the University of Utah and any concurrent enrollment completed during high school, regardless of the length of attendance. This includes institutions where you have courses currently in progress.

An official transcript from each institution must be submitted separately. A notation of accepted transfer credit on another institution's transcript does not replace the requirement to submit an official transcript from the institution where the credits were originally completed.

Complete Short-Answer/Essay Questions

You will answer three questions that speak to your preparedness for the RN-BS program.

What experiences can you write about? You may draw from any area of your life, including:

  • School or academic work
  • Jobs or internships
  • Volunteer or community service
  • Caregiving for a family member or friend
  • Military service
  • Leadership roles
  • Personal life experiences

Admission Process

To be considered for admission, applicants must:

  • Submit a complete electronic application by the deadline.
  • Submit copies of all required official transcripts by the deadline.
  • Have no more than three outstanding prerequisite courses.
  • Have a completed prerequisite GPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • Have a Nursing School GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Experienced RNs

Experienced RNs who are below the GPA requirement may still apply if they meet all of the following requirements:

  • 2.5–2.69 cumulative prerequisite GPA
  • At least 2 years of full-time RN experience (or equivalent part-time experience)
  • Active, unencumbered RN license

All applicants will receive an email notification indicating whether their application will move forward in the admission process.
