College of Nursing Application Process

You should apply to the U of U for the specific semester you plan to start coursework. For more information regarding the timing of your applications, please contact your Academic Advisor.

Deadlines

A complete application must be received by the deadline at 5:00 PM Mountain Time.

Fall Semester
Opens: April 1
Closes: June 1, 5:00PM MST

Spring Semester
Opens: September 2
Closes: November 1, 5:00PM MST

Summer Semester
Opens: December 1
Closes: March 1, 5:00PM MST

The application portal opens 90 days before each application deadline.

RN-BS Application

  • Copies of Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities
  • Experience Section  
  • Access through College of Nursing website

U of U application

  • Apply only when you know which semester you wish to start (applications are only good for one semester at a time)  
  • Application type
    • Transfer
    • 2nd bachelors (if you have a previous degree)
    • Returning (if you have taken U of U courses prior)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities
  • Choose “Uonline” from campus drop-down menu
  • Choose “pre-nursing” as area of focus (full major status in nursing will be declared as part of onboarding process)
  • U of U application deadlines:
    • Fall: April 1
    • Spring: November 1
    • Summer: March 1

Application Requirements

Education

Upload a copy of an official transcript from all colleges and universities attended including the University of Utah and concurrent enrollment during high school, regardless of the length of attendance, including for courses in-progress. An official transcript for each institution must be submitted separately, meaning notation of accepted transfer credit does not replace the need for an official transcript from the university from where credits were transferred.

Complete Short Answer/Essay Questions

  • You will answer three questions that speak to your preparedness for the RN-BS program. 
  • What experience can you write about? You may draw from any area of your life including:
    • School or academic work 
    • Jobs or internships 
    • Volunteer or community service 
    • Caregiving for a family member or friend 
    • Military service 
    • Leadership roles 
    • Personal life experiences 

Admission Process

The College of Nursing adheres to the University of Utah's policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity in admission decisions.

  • Complete electronic application received by the deadline
  • Copies of all official transcripts uploaded to the application by the deadline
  • No more than three outstanding prerequisite courses
  • Completed prerequisite courses GPA 2.7 or higher
  • Nursing school GPA of 2.7 or higher
    • Experienced RNs who may be below the GPA requirement may still apply if they meet the following requirements:
      • * 2.5–2.69 cumulative prerequisite GPA
      • * ≥2 years full-time RN experience (or equivalent part-time)
      • * Active, unencumbered RN license
  • Submitted application to the University of Utah (Applicant does not need to have been admitted yet)

All applicants will receive email notification whether their application is moved forward or not.

Students who are denied admission are responsible for completing and submitting a new application. Applications are not automatically forwarded. Unfortunately, due to limited staffing resources and an extremely high number of applicants, we are unable to do post-decision application file reviews.
