Caring For Communities Both Near and Far

In an increasingly multicultural and interconnected global community, the landscape of health care is changing. The College of Nursing's Global Learning Program supports students, faculty, and staff in meeting multifaceted global health needs both at home and abroad while broadening their skills, perspectives, and cultural humility.

The following definitions serve as the foundation for the College of Nursing's Global Learning Program activites and procedures:

  • Global Health as a: '...area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide NOT worldside," Koplan, et al (2009);
  • Global Learning as a: '...term used to describe educational initiatives that develop students’ capacities to navigate global conditions and address interconnected issues, trends, and systems,” Landorf et al. (2018)

Our Mission:

We strive to foster an academic environment that embraces self & cultural awareness and humility among students, faculty and staff through global learning experiences that promote safe, ethical, equitable, bidirectional and sustainable scholarship, research, and practice with our interdisciplinary partners at home and abroad.

The College of Nursing values student participation in global learning activities in all programs of study. All students with a strong interest in global health (at home and abroad) are encouraged to participate in various global learning opportunities through the College of Nursing and on campus. Faculty are available to mentor students in pursuing global learning projects within their program of study and are committed to guiding students in effecting safe, equitable and sustainable global health outcomes.

Global Learning Opportunities

Global learning opportunities include, but are not limited to, engaging in study abroad experiences, attending global health speaker series, collaborating locally with cross-cultural community groups, and completing collaborative online transcultural education.

Garrett Schwanke
This Global Learning Experience gave me invaluable perspective on the US American healthcare system. International comparators are essential to identifying areas for domestic improvement, contextualizing the money we spend on healthcare, and qualifying the outcomes we achieve. This experience offered meaningful interdisciplinary exchange with diverse nursing colleagues including BSN , MSN, DNP, and PhD students in addition to CON faculty. The "hidden curriculum" of our ongoing conversations throughout the trip has given me important insights and indelible impressions about how I could contribute to practice transformation in this country. I am deeply grateful for this unforgettable opportunity.
