The College of Nursing proudly extends its congratulations to the exceptional individuals recognized at the recent University of Utah's Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award ceremony. This event celebrates the remarkable achievements of undergraduate researchers and mentors, highlighting their invaluable contributions to knowledge and society.
Speaking of the depth of research initiatives at the university, Mitzi M. Montoya, provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, shared, “In the 2023-2024 Academic Year, we had nearly 700 students funded for their research, and more than 1,200 undergraduate researchers were supported to present their research[...]. We had over 266 publications in The Range: Undergraduate Research Journal and even more co-authored articles with faculty. This effort, amazingly, has been supported [by] over 400 faculty mentors. For our students [...], what you're doing and your participation in this activity is what we hope every student has the opportunity to experience.”
Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher
Michaella Halweg, honored as the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher, received praise from nominators Dr. Rebekah Perkins, Dr. Jacqueline Eaton, Dr. Katarina Friberg Felsted, and Dr. Kara Dassel. In Michaella's nomination, they remarked: "As mentors and collaborators, we have had the privilege of witnessing Michaella's extraordinary journey and contribution to the field of Nursing Research, particularly in addressing underrepresented areas of non-traditional age students in higher education. Michaella's impact extends beyond her own research. Her efforts to mentor peers, share insights, and encourage participation in research activities have significantly enriched the research culture within the College of Nursing. Her work not only addresses a critical gap in nursing and nursing education research but also serves as an inspiring model for her peers. Congratulations to Michaella!"
Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award
Professor Sara Simonsen, the recipient of the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor award, was commended by Dr. Lauri Linder for her sustained engagement with undergraduate pre-nursing and nursing students in research. Dr. Linder noted: "She has a sustained record of engaging undergraduate pre-nursing and nursing students in research. Dr. Simonsen brings a distinct understanding of the apprehensions and challenges that students may feel in relation to completing their thesis work or engaging in research."
These individuals exemplify the dedication and scholarly excellence of our College of Nursing community, enriching not only our college but also the broader field of nursing research. Congratulations again to Michaella Halweg and Professor Sara Simonsen for their well-deserved recognition!
