Julie Peila Gee, PhD, MSNED, RN, has been appointed as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Utah College of Nursing, effective September 1, 2024. Gee’s leadership will be pivotal in directing the Baccalaureate, Master of Science (MS), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs at the College, which offers the most comprehensive nursing and interdisciplinary gerontology education in Utah.
“I am honored to take on this new role and to continue advocating for student success and advancing our academic nursing and interdisciplinary gerontology programs at the College of Nursing,” said Gee. “Our goal is to prepare clinicians, leaders, scientists, and policymakers and create a profound and lasting impact on healthcare delivery, policy, and research. We are dedicated to fostering a dynamic student-centered academic environment that not only meets but exceeds the evolving needs of our community partners.”
Before her new appointment, Gee was Associate Professor (Clinical), co-led the Scholarly Project courses for DNP students, and briefly served as Assistant Dean for the MS and DNP Programs. Through visionary leadership, she will promote exceptional student experiences, advocate for students’ academic success, and foster a culture of academic excellence. Gee succeeds Gwen Latendresse, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, who following sabbatical leave will return to focus on her funded research projects.
Marla De Jong, PhD, RN, CCNS, FAAN, Dean of the College of Nursing, said, “Dr. Gee’s impact at the College of Nursing will be critical as we continuously evolve our curriculum to educate nurses and gerontologists who are well-prepared to provide accessible and equitable health care, and improve the well-being of everyone. Given her strong partnerships within the community and collaborative spirit, I also am confident that Dr. Gee will spearhead initiatives to strengthen collaborations with practice partners, ensuring that academic curricula are aligned with real-world clinical needs, enhancing the overall quality of nursing education and patient care.”
Gee earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Montana State University, a Master of Science degree in nursing leadership and education from Regis University (Colorado), and a PhD degree, with an emphasis on vulnerable populations, from New Mexico State University.
